Artworks

Don’t you hate art?

Well, if you do, I’m not entirely sure why you’re here. But, don’t you hate not knowing anything about art? In that case, this is a good place to start.

Before we start on the extended back story, here are instructions for the impatient on getting the most out of the site:

Instructions

  1. Click the Artworks link above and find a piece of art you’re interested in.
  2. Click on the link for the piece.
  3. Click on the artwork’s title.
  4. Click on the annoying blue dots.
  5. Amaze your friends, family, and strangers at parties with what you’ve learned.
  6. If you liked it, please make a small contribution to my (toy) yacht fund.

Now that that’s out of the way, back to the back story!

I’m an art enthusiast who used to wander through museums looking at great works of art and understanding absolutely nothing about them. Like many people, I knew I was supposed to like art and had heard of terms like “brushwork” and “composition,” but really had no idea how they related to any work of art.

I treated art like most people treat wine - I feared it, because I didn’t know anything and I was afraid to admit it in case I encountered an undercover art snob who’d laugh bitterly at my ignorance.

So, I decided to buy a few books and stumbled across this wonderful site and I began to get art.

Turns out that art is lot like wine. It appears intimidating at first, but with a little bit of confidence and a sense of adventure, you can start to appreciate it. As with wine (or anything, really), you could spend years becoming an expert. Or you could take a few minutes and learn the basics. And come back later when you have time and learn a little more.

That’s where this site comes in. I want people to understand a few tidbits here and there to get what makes great art, well, great. My hope is that you’ll follow a similar path as my own and use a subtle introduction as an invitation to learn more.
